In this article in Outside Magazine are some observations made by Dr. Mike Joyner , Mayo Clinic researcher on elite sports physiology, and Total Immersion Head Coach Terry Laughlin.
I had the privilege of meeting and training with Dr. Joyner at an open-water camp in August 2013 in New Paltz NY, where I was assisting Coach Terry. In person and online Dr. Joyner is rather modest, but he is apparently quite an scientific heavy-weight when it comes to the topic of world-record setting athletes, which is his particular study of passion.
